This photograph was captured June 11, 2003, during a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) press conference, held to provide attendees with an update on this year's monkeypox outbreak- there in the United States. From this particular perspective, former CDC Deputy Director Dr. David Fleming was briefing the press on the number of human monkeypox virus infections reported to date, as well as the actions taken by the CDC. , in cooperation with state health departments, to stop viral spread. Note the easel on the right, supporting a photograph depicting a scanning electron micrograph (SEM) image of a monkeypox virion.
