Dr. James H. Nakano who directed the Smallpox Laboratory (completed in 1967), which later became one of the world's leading reference centers. His laboratory work on smallpox was instrumental in delineating the strengths and weaknesses of various laboratory diagnostic methods, demonstrating that no reservoir of smallpox could be maintained in wild animals. The articles and textbook chapters written by Nakano and his associates between 1968 and 1985 are a key scholarly resource in this area. CDC/ Dr. Dan F. Palmer
