This historic 1997 image was created during an investigation into an outbreak of monkeypox, which took place in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), from 1996 to 1997, formerly Zaire. Pictured were American zoologist Delphi Messinger and Dr LV Okito as they purchased a squirrel from one of the local villagers, which was then tested for the presence of the smallpox virus of the monkey.
