Monkeypox outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), 1996-1997, formerly in Zaire. In 1996, 71 suspected cases of human monkeypox were reported in Katako-Kombe. In February 1997 epidemiological observations and laboratory results lead to the conclusion that the repeated reintroduction of monkeypox virus by animals is necessary to maintain the disease in the local human population.
