Image taken in 1997 during an investigation into an outbreak of monkeypox, which took place in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), from 1996 to 1997, formerly Zaire. From this particular vantage point, R. Joel Williams, DVM, and American zoologist, Delphi Messinger, were examining what appeared to be a primate, which was one of the suspected sources of this zoonotic infection. CDC / Brian WJ Mahy
