TEENS EARN COLLEGE DEGREES AT IBM AFFILIATED SCHOOL — Thirty-one teens from the IBM-affiliated P-TECH school in Brooklyn, NY, a collaboration between IBM, City University of New York, and the New York City Department of Education, participate in New York City College of Technology’s 78th Commencement ceremony on Monday, June 4, 2018. IBM’s Brooklyn P-TECH was the first in a national network of more than 100 grades STEM-focused “P-TECH” schools, inspired by the IBM Foundation, that confer both no-cost high school diplomas and associate degrees, particularly to underprivileged populations. So far, P-TECHs are affiliated with 70 community colleges and 450 companies, which provide paid internships, mentors and job interviews. Often, students are first in their families to attend college, and some earn public high school and associate degree in well under six years. These technical skills are crucial to begin fillng the many vacant, middle skill, “new collar” positions that have been created nationally. (Augusto Menezes/Feature Photo Service for IBM)
